Reflection – Billy Dante

Opening Reception: Friday 20th March at 6-8pm

Opening Hours: Friday March 20th 1pm -8pm | Saturday March 21st & Sunday 22nd : 11am – 6pm

Venue: The MART Gallery, 190a Rathmines Road Lower, Dublin 6

Reflection is a solo exhibition from Billy Dante at MART Gallery, Dublin. This exhibition explores inner reflection and wider themes of connectivity with the immediate space around us but also to global situations. The macro and the micro are depicted as a means of examining the thread that ties us all together and the cyclical nature of events great and small. Looking at the self, surrounding space and the collective – the paintings challenge and equally lean into the natural flow.

In the act of painting one is tasked with (like in life) navigating light and dark. Reflecting the world around us and how it is experienced – a painting is a reflection of an action placed on a canvas but not passing through it, it sends it back to show a version of who we are. We are but reflections of experience and how will the experience of today reflect?

Everything I look upon

I make

A mirror of

Wherein to see my soul in all its seasons.

Mirrors, P. Kavanagh

The Irish Contemporaries 5 continues CIACLA’s acclaimed series celebrating the breadth and innovation of contemporary Irish visual art. This fifth edition brings together a diverse range of practices and perspectives, offering audiences in Los Angeles an opportunity to experience the vitality of Ireland’s artistic voice today. Through painting, sculpture, installation, film, and new media, the exhibition reflects the energy and ambition of Irish artists working across disciplines and across the world.

Ireland is undergoing a powerful cultural reawakening, a return to story, language, and landscape. This revival has been deeply shaped by the work and spirit of Manchán Magan, whose voice bridged worlds, reminding us that myth and memory are still alive beneath the surface of everyday life. He invited us to see Ireland’s ancient wisdom not as something closed or exclusive, but as an open, inclusive way of being and a bridge between cultures. In a world that’s increasingly divided, where borders are hardened, people are displaced, and wars are waged, Manchán spoke instead of connection and unity, showing how Ireland’s ancient wisdom can offer compassion, belonging, and understanding across all boundaries.

Irish Contemporaries 5 explores the Irish tradition of storytelling that binds community, identity, and imagination. Artists were encouraged to explore how stories, both ancestral and new, continue to shape our sense of belonging.

Curated by Matthew Nevin & Ciara Scanlan

Presented by CIACLA – Contemporary Irish Arts Center Los Angeles, the exhibition builds on the success of previous editions, reaffirming our commitment to showcasing the best of Irish contemporary culture in an international context.

“This multi site exhibition highlights how Irish-connected artists continue to reinvent how we understand story, culture, and visual language, no matter which side of the Atlantic they’re working from.” — Matthew Nevin

Artist Bios

Vicky Ochala
Vicky Ochala is a Dublin-based artist and a recent graduate of BA in Fine Arts at TUD. She works primarily through installation, using materials and processes such as welding, casting, screen printing, and video. Her practice explores personal narratives within political histories and architectural structures. Much of Vicky’s work is inspired by her Polish heritage, drawing on stories passed down by relatives. While deeply personal, it also speaks to the shared histories and experiences of Polish and Eastern European communities affected by the Communist and Post-Communist period. www.instagram.com/vickyochala_va/

Lily Mannion

Lily Mannion is an Irish visual artist working across multiple disciplines, including ceramics, sculpture, digital and textile-based media. Her work is process-driven and materiality-centred. Currently, her work examines processes of exploitation, extraction, control, and industry, referencing various ecological and scientific phenomena to explore how they reflect broader social and political issues. Her work aims to make the relationships between things somewhat legible, locating sources of cohesion to discern and convey an order that already exists. Contact details: – www.instagram.com/lilymannionartist

Nicole Manning
Nicole Manning is a Dublin based artist working predominantly through the medium of paint. Manning is a recent graduate of NCAD (2024) in which she received her Joint Hons BA in Fine Art Painting & Education. Inspired by the mind-body connection & the interplay between the physical and psychological, her work explores the external expression of inner turmoil within the human experience. Rooted in her experience of living with chronic stomach pain, Manning’s recent work focuses on how trauma manifests within the body. Using gestural, twisting, brushwork to mirror the visual of the intestines, she explores how symbolic & archetypal imagery can narrate the complex experience of living with an invisible illness. Victorian bed frames, curled bodies & animals act as metaphor & alter-ego within her paintings. Her work aims to translate internal pain into visible form.”  www.nicolemanning.art | www.instagram.com/nicolemannning/
