A Platform for Irish Contemporary Art on the Global Stage

The Irish Contemporaries series has become an essential platform for showcasing the breadth and diversity of contemporary Irish visual art in Los Angeles. By presenting work in Los Angeles—one of the world’s most influential art capitals—the exhibition creates opportunities for Irish artists to engage with new audiences, gain international recognition, and contribute to a wider cultural dialogue with local artists. Each year, The Irish Contemporaries fosters cross-cultural exchange, amplifying the voices of artists from Los Angeles, Ireland and the Irish diaspora.

Curated by Matthew Nevin & Ciara Scanlan, this exhibition showcases a range of visual art forms, including performance, digital media, sculpture, and print, offering visitors a glimpse into the cutting-edge talents of contemporary artists based in Ireland and Los Angeles.

Featured Artists
This year’s exhibition highlights the work of three featured artists working in Ireland whose practices explore themes of migration, identity, technology, and embodiment:

Beulah Ezeugo examines postcolonial geographies and memory, engaging with archives to interrogate the legacy of borders and migration. Her work in projects like the Éireann & I Archive illuminates shared memories between Irish and Nigerian diasporas, challenging colonial narratives and fostering cross-cultural connections.
Clodagh Assata Boyce blends textiles, audio, and collage to critique marginalization, memory, and self-definition. Their socially engaged practice, rooted in community organizing, explores identity and belonging through a queer and diasporic lens, as seen in projects such as A TOTAL TRANSFORMATION IS NEEDED at MART Gallery.
El Putnam merges performance and digital media to investigate the interplay between the body and technology. Her recent work, Under the Feet of Shadows, combines speculative fiction and myth with themes of technological and ecological entanglement, using art to explore our evolving relationship with digital systems.

The exhibition will also shed a spotlight on local artists Brenda Welsh, Brendan Holmes, Christopher O’Mahony, Colleen Keough, Jerry McGrath, Julie Weber, Sionnan Wood and Tom Dowling.

Supported By
The Irish Contemporaries {IV} is made possible through the generous support of CIACLA, 18th Street Arts Center, MART Gallery & Studios, Culture Ireland, the Government of Ireland Emigrant Support Programme, Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, and the LA County Department of Arts and Culture.

“This exciting group exhibition showcases a mix of photography, visual art, and film, offering a unique assemblage that casts a spotlight on the captivating blend of techniques, narratives, and perspectives characterising the contemporary art scene in Ireland and Los Angeles,” says co-curator Matthew Nevin.

About the Artists

Emma Dowling is a self taught Irish contemporary artist. Her work contains expressive abstract layers of colour and form. Her paintings are inspired by nature, sacred sounds, mood and possibility. She paints mostly in oil and acrylics. www.instagram.com/emmadowling_art

Maura Culbert began her journey in the art and design industry almost two decades ago. Maura’s initial introduction to art was through interior design, which she has had a huge passion for from a very young age. While studying interior design she then discovered art (painting in particular). This led her to complete a BA Hons degree in fine art. For Maura design and art went hand in hand. This is clear from her wealth of knowledge in colour. Soon after the completion of her degree Maura had a number of successful exhibitions located in Galleries and restaurants around Ireland. While pursuing her love of creating art Maura then started her business as an interior designer based in her hometown of Waterford Ireland. www.mauraculbertart.com

Deirdre Hayes is an award-winning plein air artist and studio oil painter based in Dublin, Ireland. She creates serene, atmospheric landscapes and cityscapes, along with timeless portraits and still lifes. Her work reflects the unique light of each scene and evokes a strong sense of place, drawing inspiration from the beauty of the Irish landscape and her local surroundings. Siobhan Heraty is a contemporary artist, based in Cabinteely, Co. Dublin, where she creates paintings which evoke a sense of space, freedom and possibility. “Sea and sky are always an inspiration, whether calm and clear or wild and moody – I love how their ever-changing constancy feeds the soul in some way and provides a place for the mind to rest or wander awhile.”  www.siobhanheratyart.com

She has also be a regular residency artist at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre. Her Coastal scenes are of The Wild Atlantic Way, an area of great interest and significance to the artist. Her work shows assured use of texture and mark making with a concentration on surface. Louise Newman is interested in the hidden narrative that can exist in an image and her interpretation of that. She paints with increasing skill and assurance, suggesting things like weather, atmosphere, mood and a rhythm that always lingers on the surface of her paintings.” www.louisenewman.com

But there is a thing
Which is something,
Only one thing
Which is something,
And which I feel
Because it wants
TO GET OUT:
The presence
Of my bodily
Suffering. – Antonin Artaud, 1938

Jung teaches that the artist is a vehicle for the psychic life of humankind. We are living in an era of instant gratification, media distraction, social media consumption of images, and “everything that was directly lived has recede into a representation” (Guy Debord, Society of the Spectacle, 1967) To maintain an image of self, which is representative to a world transformed into mere images, individuals are required to sustain an image of self, aligned with a highly demanding Society.  In the process we have lost connection with our true self. As a society we have alienated ourselves from our primal selves. By sustaining the darkness inside of our bodies in order to appear strong and in control we are preventing our true self from coming to light. But what will happen if we allow that darkness, that pulsating pain of life to burst out of our bodies in order to sustain in tune with our primal self? How would that bodily pain of life be expressed through our body as a membrane of experience? How as artists we are responding to the chaos happening around the world and inside of us? What is piercing our bodies? Where is Joy in life? Sadness? Anger for all the injustice we are witnessing around us? Where is hope in a better tomorrow?  How do you erase your body and then draw it newly all over again?

Living beneath the skin of society; such a body seeks to shed the clothes of social construction.

Supported by The MART Gallery & Studios, Livestock and The Arts Council of Ireland.

A Note from The Gallery: This event may include adult themes, explicit content, and depictions of bodily harm; attendees must be 18+.

Artist Bios and statements:

Christina Loughlin

Christina Loughlin’s  practice interrogates the persistent effects of intergenerational trauma in Ireland, shaped by the twin forces of colonization and institutional religion. Through a multidisciplinary approach, her work explores the resonances between ancestral physical toil and mental struggle, addressing themes of forced domestic and agricultural labor, sectarianism, and excommunication.

A central focus is the Ulster linen industry of the 19th and 20th centuries, examining its lasting impact on both the environment and the people who labored within it. The desolate boglands and discordant coastline of the Belmullet Peninsula in Mayo serve as an allegory for layers of ancestral trauma, their shifting and eroded landscapes mirroring the instability of inherited wounds.

Utilizing found and crafted objects, performance art, and film, her installations seek to unveil and release patterns of trauma carried through multiple generations. Her performances function as acts of psychomagic—a surrealist trauma therapy developed by Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky—enacted with intention to disrupt and heal inherited cycles of suffering.

Andrew Grace

Drawing on Queer Theory, José Estaban Muñoz discusses the queering of space through alternative forms of declarations, such as the queering of space rendered through gay public sex acts (cruising). He investigates ideas about the then and now, the past and present of where Queerness lives.

These ideas are further developed in a video essay that explores cruising spaces, public parks and toilets, through the lens of the then and now. The ‘then’ being the organic erotic nature within past perspectives, the ‘now’ being the digital expansion of sexual desires through the present. The placement and use of blueprints becomes consistent, posing questions of where Queerness lies and what the future holds for Queers.

Andrew, an artist and researcher, thrives through expansive research focusing closely on Queer Theory. Their practice expands understandings and continuously longs to question ideas. They work predominantly with video and sculpture, using post lens cultures to further expand definitions and ways of thinking.

Mary Madeleine

Mary Madeleine is an emerging artist and curator based in Dublin, Ireland. Mary’s artistic practices traverse a diverse range of mediums, including installation, photography, sculpture, and paint. Reflecting her Irish and Bahamian heritage, at the core of Mary’s artistic expression are themes of mysticism, spirituality, race, and identity.

In her latest series, “The Unseen,” Mary presents photographic prints of her sculptural compositions suspended within a void black space, offering a visually striking representation of her contemplation of traditional African sculpture and Caribbean mythology. Through this body of work, Mary explores the profound impact of colonialism on traditional spiritual practices and the ensuing loss of cultural heritage.

Mary’s exploration of the profound connections between art and spirituality manifests in her methodical research of psychological and spiritual phenomena, culminating in thought-provoking experiences for viewers.
